Konrad Adenauer – Oldest Head of State

Monday, May 22nd, 2023

In 1949, Konrad Adenauer was elected West Germany’s first chancellor. Elected at age 73, he continued to serve in the position for the next fourteen years and resigned at age 87. To this date, Konrad Adenauer is the oldest head of government to have served in any Western country. Joe Biden, the current president of the United States, is running for re-election in 2024. If elected for a second term, he will turn 82 two weeks after Election Day and finish his term at age 86. He still would not break the age record set by Konrad Adenauer.

Konrad Adenauer – nicknamed Der Alte

Der Alte translates to “the Old One.” When he was first elected at age 73, it was widely speculated that Adenauer would only be a caretaker chancellor. Instead, he proved to be an astute politician and was re-elected three times (1953, 1957, and 1961). He held the office of Germany’s chancellor throughout much of the Cold War and led the country from the ruins of World War II to democracy, stability, and economic prosperity. During his fourteen years in office, he oversaw the establishment of West and East Germany in 1949 during the Allied occupation after World War II. He witnessed the East German uprising of 1953, and came to grips with the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961. Konrad Adenauer had to relinquish the chancellorship one year before the end of his fourth term due to a scandal and petty rivalries. He remained the head of his party until his retirement at age 90.

Is Age a Liability or a Strength for Heads of Government?

Currently, U.S. politicians of both parties and the electorate debate whether an octogenarian leader is less likely to be up to the task, or whether advanced age might benefit his/her judgment that a younger president cannot match. At this point, the oldest U.S. presidents were Ronald Reagan at age 77 plus 349 days, Donald Trump at age 74 plus 220 days, and Dwight D. Eisenhower at age 70 plus 98 days. If Joe Biden were to be re-elected for a second term, he would be the oldest president in U.S. history. The same would be true of Donald Trump if elected. He would be 78 ½ on Election Day and finish his term at age 82 ½.

Rake California Great Again!

Monday, October 19th, 2020

Should Californians RAKE CALIFORNIA GREAT AGAIN? As of 4 October 2020, more than 4 million acres of California forestland have burned so far this year, more than doubling the previous record. According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, 2020 was California’s worst wildfire season in modern history.  What makes the blazes so frequent and so destructive? Scientists point to four key factors: (1) climate change, (2) downed power lines and ill-considered individual conduct, (3) fire suppression and (4) Santa Ana winds.

President Trump Disagrees with Our Scientists

President Donald Trump disagrees. He is convinced that the majority of California’s wildfires are attributable to a lack of proper raking of the forest floor. “You’ve got to take care of the floors. You know the floors of the forest, very important,” Trump noted. He claimed that the Finnish president told him that Finland “spends a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things. And they don’t have any problem. And when they do, it’s a very small problem.” https://www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-says-raking-would-help-prevent-forest-fires_n_5bf0d578e4b0f32bd58a1aba

Why isn’t the Federal government raking their Forests located in California?

Since 58% of California’s 33 million acres of forestlands are owned and managed by the Federal government and the State of California owns only 3%, I wonder why Mr. Trump hasn’t sent out Federal workers to rake the federally-owned forests. After all, the Feds own about 20 times as much forestland in California as the State does. If you believe that the crux of the problem lies in the lack of raking, then where are your Federal rakers, Mr. Trump?

Classical Architecture – Embraced by Trump and Hitler

Monday, March 16th, 2020

In 1937, Adolf Hitler announced that henceforth all new government buildings were to be constructed in the style of traditional classical architecture. The mandate was part of Hitler’s grandiose plan of transforming Berlin into “the capital of the world.” Hitler named his utopian city Germania. In this new metropolis, German government buildings were to rival the edifices of ancient Egypt, Babylon, Rome and Athens.

In early February 2020, word got out that the Trump administration was working on an Executive Order to impose classical architecture on all new U.S. Federal buildings. According to Trump, these traditional style buildings will “once again inspire respect instead of bewilderment or repugnance.” https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/11/opinion/letters/federal-architecture.html

Is this Trump’s first step toward Trumponia?

Five Tricks a Demagogue Employs to Incite the Public

Thursday, February 6th, 2020

What is a demagogue? According to Merriam-Webster “a demagogue is a leader who makes use of popular prejudices and false claims and promises to gain power.” The art of inflaming peoples’ passions has been practiced since democracy was invented. One of the first known demagogues was the Athenian Kleon in ancient Greece. Modern-time practitioners include Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Joseph McCarthy and Donald Trump.

Adolf Hitler was a demagogue who incited the public by employing a number of tricks that are still used today. www.walled-in-berlin.com

An orator puts to use a number of tricks to incite his/her audience. Adolf Hitler was a master in this art. By the time he came to power in 1933 he knew how to rouse the public’s emotions, prejudices and ignorances. Below are five of the many methods Hitler employed to achieve his goal. Many of the same tactics are still used by current politicians. Next time you catch some demagoguery, pay close attention to see if you recognize the ploys.

Rule 1 – A Demagogue Tells People What They Want to Hear

Following World War I, Germany was a defeated nation. Under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles the victors had deeply humiliated the country. The Weimar Republic and ist political system were broken. The economy lay in shambles. The chances for recovery in the foreseeable future were zero. Along came Adolf Hitler. He promised to “Make Germany Great Again.” That’s what people wanted to hear and believe. He played to their desires and fears.

Rule 2 – A Manipulator Communicates Directly With his Audience

In 1933, the Volksempfaenger (People’s Receiver) was invented. At the time, it was a brand-new way of communicating. The Nazis immediately recognized the radio’s propaganda potential and held the purchase price down to the equivalent of two weeks average salary. Everyone could afford one. Of course, the Nazis did not mention that the set’s sensitivity was so limited that it could receive only the Nazi propaganda channel. Hitler then used the new media platform to establish and maintain a direct and unfiltered line of communication with the public. Back then, the newly invented radio was the equivalent of today’s social media, such as Twitter and Facebook. The one-channel radio allowed Adolf Hitler to bypass the standard news media and disseminate half-truths, outright lies, innuendos and racist and religious bigotry.

Rule 3 – A Demagogue Delegitimizes the Mainstream Press

Simultaneously, Hitler began to delegitimize the mainstream press. He regularly accused his opponents of spreading false information. It was Adolf Hitler who coined the word Luegenpresse (press of lies) to vilify the mainstream press. Today we call it “fake news.”

Rule 4 – An Agitator Tries to Demonize his Opponents

Hitler demonized his political opponents by calling them vicious names, such as parasites, criminals, cockroaches and scum. He blamed Jews and other racial and religious scapegoats for all of Germany’s ills, banned non-Aryan migration into Germany and embraced mass detention and deportations.

Rule 5 – A Demagogue Uses Coercion Rather than Cooperation

Adolf Hitler rejected international cooperation in favor of military and economic coercion and did not pay any attention to expert advice. Instead, he kept his own counsel. At the end of the war, when his plans for Germania fell apart, he ordered Germany’s destruction. Then he took the cowardly way out by committing suicide while the German people paid the price for Hitler’s ill-conceived ideas for the next 45 years.

These are just five of the many tricks a demagogue employs to mislead the public to gain power. He feeds the populace a steady diet of what it wants to hear and the people fail to demand the evidence behind the allegations and promises. British politician, Geoffrey Van Orden recently called this type of behavior on the part of the public “falling into the trap of an echo chamber of self-delusion.”

U.S. President Cannot be Beyond Criticism

Monday, October 21st, 2019

To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but it is morally treasonable to the American public.

I am the Chosen One – True Test of Civilization

Monday, August 26th, 2019

The true test of civilization is not the census, nor the size of the cities, nor the economy, but the kind of man that the country turns out.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson.

What would Emerson have said had he heard Donald Trump declare on 21 August 2019, “I am the chosen One” along with a glance toward the sky?

Where is the outrage?

Monday, January 28th, 2019

Is there no outrage these days when we are told blatant lies? I grew up in West Berlin during the Cold War. One day, on 15 June 1961, I happened to listen to the transmission of a press conference given by East German head of state, Walter Ulbricht. A reporter asked Ulbricht whether making West Berlin a “free city” would mean creating a state boundary at the Brandenburg Gate. Walter Ulbricht’s concept of a “free city,” was that the three western powers would stop occupying and protecting West Berlin. The reporter further questioned whether a “free city” would imply a permanent division between East and West Berlin.

No one has the intention of building a wall

Walter Ulbricht responded by assuring the reporter that the East German government was not planning to erect a wall. Without blinking, he declared, “Niemand hat die Absicht, eine Mauer zu errichten – No one has the intention of building a wall.” Then he added that East German construction workers were fully occupied with the construction of housing for East German workers. They had no time to build a wall. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjgKKOdVRx4/

Outrage over a blatant Ulbricht lie

Contrary to these statements, only two months later – on 13 August 1961 – Ulbricht gave orders to begin construction of the Berlin Wall.

Work began shortly after midnight when immense stockpiles of concertina wire and bollards emerged at the border. It became evident that the East German head of state had already been deep into preparation for this momentous event at the time of the press conference. He had told a blatant lie. While East German citizens shrugged their shoulders in resignation, there was outrage throughout West Berlin and all over the western world. How could a head of state sink so low as to shamelessly lie to his own people and to the rest of the world? Was that the difference between communism and democracy, we wondered? Our heads of state didn’t blatantly lie. They didn’t have to.

No outrage over Trump lies?

Now Donald Trump is the president of the United States. Trump has told countless lies and half-truths since he took office. Where is the outrage now? Many Americans simply shrug their shoulders at these deceptions. “That’s Trump,” they say. Does the current generation of Americans accept Trump’s lies the way East German citizens accepted Ulbricht’s lies in the 1960s?

How to Improve your Sales Skills – Do you Need to?

Monday, July 22nd, 2013

Here is how to improve your sales skills: THINK FIRST! Sounds elementary, doesn’t it? But apparently it isn’t. Let me tell you what happened recently to a dynamic retired couple I know. You need an appointment just to have a cup of coffee with Brad and Brenda. That’s how busy they are. After years of fulltime careers and parenting, they now spend their days exactly the way they always wanted to but couldn’t. When Brad dug up their entire Texas Privet hedge in a single day a couple of weeks ago, he wrenched his back. Along with physical therapy his doctor suggested brief relaxation breaks. “Do you have a recliner at home?” the doctor asked.

“A recliner? Never did,” Brad admitted. “But if you think it would help my back, we’ll get one,” he added. After mulling it over with Brenda later that day, they agreed to purchase not one, but two recliners and headed for a furniture store. Amber, the sweet saleslady, was all smiles. She encouraged the pair to try out some floor models, and soon a nearly perfect specimen was located. The chair was sturdy, comfortable, and stylish. But it had one drawback. Brenda did not like the shade of the fabric.

“No problem,” Amber was quick to point out. “The chairs can be ordered in any number of colors and fabrics.” Sure enough, Brenda spotted a nice earth-tone swatch in the sample book, and in short order the deal was about to be clinched. That’s when Amber “excelled” with her sales skills. “You’ll be so glad you bought these chairs,” she gushed. “It might be the last major furniture purchase you’ll ever make.”

How do you think Brad and Brenda, our dynamic retired couple, reacted? Do you think they purchased the recliners? Do you think they’ll ever go back to that furniture store? Do you think Amber will be able to sell ice to the Eskimos? THINK FIRST, Amber. Practice some empathy.

Re-reading this article in 2020 after four years of Donald Trump as president of the United States, I have experienced a paradigm shift (a fundamental change in underlying assumptions). In 2013, I believed that Amber’s insensitivity to her customers’ needs made her an ineffective sales representative. But if Donald Trump was able to sell his notion of democracy to 72 million Americans in 2020 and barely lose the election, then maybe Amber could sell ice to the Eskimos after all. What do you think?
